SEO results have always been unpredictable, Gaining a constant ranking position and knowing the reasons for it; is actually not possible. So how do we make sure that we gain consistent search engine rankings for the website? It’s only by passing all the SEO factors and doing clean link building. Let’s talk about important technical SEO factor : Canonicalization.
Canonicalization is the process of declaring one particular webpage URL to be original referring to multiple duplicate Content/URLs. Duplicate Content is nothing but having many forms of a single URL, these multiple URLs are generated by web servers, referral websites, etc. For Example, Consider a ecommerce website; depending on the user options and filters URL keeps on changing and various URL versions are created. So, How do search engines identify which URL is original, and Which URL it should rank in search results? Canonical Tag specifies the original URL to the search engines.
Issue is when multiple copies are created of one original content and search engines wouldn’t know which page to rank. These pages have same piece of content, but different URLs and the links that are supposed to go to the original content, split up. In SEO point of view, when link building is done; link points to original content and due to duplicate URLs link popularity splits up in duplicate URLs diluting the importance of link building.
All the above URLs intend to the homepage of Digital Verge, same content but different URL structures.
Seeing the above URLs for single homepage, Google gets confused which URL to index. Without having a canonical tag for anyone of the URL above, we are increasing the SEO vulnerability of the site as search engines find difficulty to find the original one. Duplicate content for search engines is a big NO. So, having canonical tag would strengthen your SEO and also make the website robust.
Firstly, recognize which URL you want to be the original one and gain link popularity as well as search rankings. For example, you want http://digitalverge.net to have canonical tag. Add this code to the <head> section of the HTML code.
<link rel=”canonical” href=”http://digitalverge.net” />
Canonical tag can be given to as many appropriate pages needed, But see through that every link and every tag is relevant and not spammy. Having Canonical tag avoid duplicate content in the point of SEO, so don’t forget to do canonicalization for your website.
